Lesson plan and supporting resources

Introduction 20 minutes
  • Explain to the class that during a game of cricket there is always a tea interval for the players, coaches and officials to eat and drink. Discuss that usually this consists of sandwiches and cakes.
  • Explain that they are going to research about fruit, vegetables and healthy diets in general to write a fact page about healthy eating. There will also be a section, like a ‘Did you know box’ with benefits for a cricketer.
  • Use ‘Fruit Nutrition Information’ in the Supporting Material section and discuss the role of each of the nutritional elements and how they affect the bodies or performance.

Main Activity 30 Minutes
  • Provide the class with the information sheets ‘Healthy Eating’, ‘Food for Sport’ in the Supporting Material section and also ‘The Healthy Eating Fact Page for Cricketers’ in the Activity section, which should be blown up to A3 and have a picture in the centre and the writing in sections around the outside. The class must research about healthy eating using the fact sheets provided and personal research and write the healthy eating fact page. The important part is to relate this specifically to cricketers and what they can do by using a box titled ‘Cricketers! Did you know?!’
  • If researching further use; www.bbc.co.uk/health/healthy_living/nutrition/, www.dole5aday.com, and carry out general or specific internet searches using www.google.co.uk

Plenary 10 Minutes
  • Move around the class and allow pupils to read aloud their healthy eating fact pages.
  • The rest of the class can provide feedback in relation to the content.
  • Gather all pages and either make a classroom display or a class book.
