To investigate the reaction time of pupils and to measure as accurately as possible.


Lesson plan and supporting resources

Introduction 10 minutes


Main Activity 40 Minutes
  • Provide the class with the ‘Reaction time test - Activity' worksheet and the pupils must test each other for their reaction times using the ‘ruler drop test' worksheet.
  • The pupils work in pairs and test each other's reaction times and record these.


Plenary 10 Minutes
  • The teacher can then collate all of the reaction times for the class and discuss the results at the end. Extend thinking by asking “Does it make a difference…: for people of different ages? Dominant hand versus non-dominant hand? Tired or alert? For men or women?"
  • Why do the pupils think the best pupil reaction time was? Do they play a lot of sport, computer games?
