Introduction 20 minutes
  • Ask the class anything they know about cricket. Any children that know quite a lot ask them to suggest any cricket vocabulary that the rest of the class may not understand, eg, googly, golden duck, etc.
  • Use the website www.skysports.com/cricket/willowandstumpy to watch your chosen episode of explanations about cricketing terminology with the Willow and Stumpy characters (Leg side, off side, the crease, the ball, extras, no ball, the googly, round the wicket, over the wicket, the Yorker, swing bowling, reverse swing, the doosra, slips, silly mid off, fine leg, night watchman).
  • Also have a look at the ‘A – Z of cricket vocabulary’ available in the Supporting Material section of this module.

Main Activity 30 Minutes

Provide the class with the ‘Completing a cricket wordsearch’ in the activity section and the class use their own knowledge along with the ‘A – Z of cricket vocabulary’ information sheet in the Supporting Material section if required.

Plenary 10 Minutes
  • Once finished use the Activity Answers from the Downloads section if required.
  • Finish by watching further Willow and Stumpy episodes.
