Main learning objective

Solve one-step and two-step problems involving measurements; choose and carry out appropriate calculations, using calculator methods where appropriate.

Timing

Lesson plan and supporting resources

Introduction 10 minutes
  • Introduce the lesson by explaining that they will be focusing on measurements.
  • Recap on the three types of measurement (Length, mass & capacity) and the units of measurement used for each type (Length = mm, cm, m, km, Mass = Kg, g, Capacity = ml, l) and work through the PPT presentation in the Supporting Material section and focus on the conversions.
  • Practice counting up from a cm figure to a metre figure to emphasise the need to convert between measurements at times, eg, 85cm – 1m (The difference being 15cm) or 98cm – 1.5m (52cm being the difference).

 

Main Activity 40 Minutes
  • Provide the class with the Activity worksheet to complete individually. They can show their working to each question.
  • Encourage pupils to check their work through carefully.

 

Plenary 10 Minutes
  • Go through the answers to the questions and ask individuals to explain how they worked out the answer to each question. If there is time they can show their workings on the board.
  • Use the activity answer sheet if required, which is available in the Downloads section of this module.
