Solve one-step and two-step problems involving numbers; choose and carry out appropriate calculations, using calculator methods where appropriate.

Timing

Lesson plan and supporting resources

Introduction 10 minutes
  • Introduce the lesson by explaining that they will be focusing on addition and subtraction.
  • Provide the class with some mental addition questions for 2-digit numbers and then 3-digits numbers if appropriate. Discuss methods of working and share with the class after each question.
  • Discuss the inverse of addition being subtraction and demonstrate. Then ask the class how they could check the answers without simply repeating the working already done. Lead them to use the inverse operation to check the answers, eg, 16 + 45 = 61 and the inverse is 61 – 45 = 16.

 

Main Activity 40 Minutes
  • Provide the class with the Activity worksheet for this module to complete individually. They can show their working to each question.
  • Encourage pupils to check their work through, possibly using the inverse operation as shown during the introductory part of the lesson.

 

Plenary 10 Minutes
  • Go through the answers to the questions and ask individuals to explain how they worked out the answer to each question. If there is time they can show their workings on the board.
  • Use the activity answer sheet if required, which is available in the Downloads section of this module.
