Lesson plan and supporting resources

Introduction 10 minutes
  • Introduce the lesson by explaining that they will be focusing on multiplication and division.
  • Begin by giving the pupils mental maths questions for any selected timestable and then ask questions for the corresponding division facts.
  • Provide the class with a multiplication question and discuss division as being the inverse. Discuss how the question could be checked without simply repeating the working of the question. Lead the class to use the inverse to check the answer, eg, 6 x 4 = 24 can be checked by completing 24 ÷ 4 = 6.

Main Activity 40 Minutes
  • Provide the class with the Activity worksheet for this module and they should complete it individually. They can show their working to each question.
  • Encourage to check their work through, possibly using the inverse operation as shown during the introductory part of the lesson
Plenary 10 Minutes
  • Go through the answers to the questions and ask individuals to explain how they worked out the answer to each question. If there is time they can show their workings on the board.
  • Use the Activity Answers if required.
